Professional dancer and author, Chelsie Hill founded the Rollettes, a dance group made up of wheelchair users, after a car accident resulted in a spinal cord injury that left her paralysed from the waist down.
“When I was first injured, there was no competition platform for people with disabilities… I looked online and I was like, 'I don't see a lot of wheelchair dancers,’” the dancer said in an interview.
Hill was determined to change that and reached out on social media to make her own community and find other wheelchair users to dance with her.
At first, it was just six wheelchair users and now, the group has evolved into the Rollettes, a wheelchair dance team that’s dedicated to empowering and representing disabled dancers.
The group has achieved enormous success, performing at many NBA games, the World of Dance and travelling internationally for shows.
By creating her own community and putting together a team of dancers who use wheelchairs, Hill and the Rollettes are breaking barriers in the dance world.
