Welcome to Spoony Stories ❤️🥄 We adore our lovely community on Spoony! It's such a joy getting to know some of the brilliant people who make Spoony so darn wonderful and learning more about their experiences with neurodivergence, chronic illness and disability.
This week, we've been chatting with Zoe from Australia. She shares what it's like to navigate life while being managing complex health conditions, the impact her health conditions have on friendships, and so much more! ♥️
Are you neurodivergent, chronically ill, and/or disabled?
Neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled.
What health conditions do you have?
BPD, Anxiety, Dysthymia, and C-PTSD.
How do you explain your health conditions to other people?
I am pretty upfront with my diagnoses because there’s nothing to be ashamed of. I tell people I have these conditions if it’s necessary to the conversation.
What impact do your health conditions have on your daily life?
My mental health exacerbates my physical health. Some days I can’t get out of bed until midday so it’s difficult for me to maintain stable relationships. I also struggle with headaches, stomach cramps, and my body is constantly sore.
What barriers have you experienced in making friends and connecting with people?
I find it tough trying to catch up with people when I’m having a physical or mental health flare up and often have to cancel. My mistrust due to trauma sometimes leads to unhealthy connections to others, but as I’ve gotten older and more stable I know that I need to prioritise my own needs.
What's been your experience on Spoony so far?
Spoony is a great opportunity for people with lived experience to find people who understand them and to help others when they’re struggling through tough times.
Each week, we share stories from the incredible Spoony community in our newsletter, podcast, and on social media. Share your story with us.
