Spoony Stories - meet Tom! 👋

Welcome to Spoony Stories ❤️🥄 Our community on Spoony is the greatest! It's such a pleasure to get to know some of the people who make Spoony such a lovely space, and learning more about their experiences with neurodivergence, chronic illness and disability.

This week, we've been chatting with Tom from Australia. He shares his experiences with friendships, how Spoony has made a difference in his life, and so much more! ♥️

Are you neurodivergent, chronically ill, and/or disabled?

Neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled.

What health conditions do you have?

Autism, ADHD, and POTS.

How do you explain your health conditions to other people?

I try to keep it simple and stick to the basics. I usually explain POTS by telling people that it's a condition that affects my heart, my ability to stay standing for prolonged periods, and it can make me feel faint and pass out sometimes.

What impact do your health conditions have on your daily life?

Every day is different. Sometimes I'll barely be affected by my health conditions, but other days, it takes over my life.

What barriers have you experienced in making friends and connecting with people?

Making friends has always been hard for me. My main issue is that I struggle to interpret or react to situations which can make social interactions difficult. I usually end up reading the room wrong and making a poorly worded or misunderstood joke.

What's been your experience on Spoony so far?

Spoony has become one of my safe spaces. I like talking to other people like me without worrying about saying something weird or having my words taken the wrong way.

Each week, we share stories from the incredible Spoony community in our newsletter, podcast, and on social media. Share your story with us.
