Welcome to Spoony Stories ❤️🥄 We're forever and always blown away by the kindness and generosity of our community on Spoony! No wonder the best part of our week is getting to know some of the people who make Spoony so wonderful and learning more about their experiences with neurodivergence, chronic illness and disability.
This week, we've been chatting with Helene from Australia. She shares what it's like to navigate life while being neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled, the impact her health conditions have on her life, and so much more! ♥️
Are you neurodivergent, chronically ill, and/or disabled?
Neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled.
What health conditions do you have?
Endometriosis (stage 4), Adenomyosis, PCOS, Gastroparesis, IBS, and ADHD.
How do you explain your health conditions to other people?
Depending on the health concern, I try to explain it as simply as possible. I also find it important to share some of the realities of living with chronic illness and how all consuming they can be, not just share the easy things.
What impact do your health conditions have on your daily life?
My chronic illnesses impact every single aspect of my life. What I can do, what I can eat, what social functions are possible, my work capacity, my moods. They impact every single facet of my life to the point it's hard to feel 'normal' sometimes.
What barriers have you experienced in making friends and connecting with people?
I find people who aren't chronically ill don't understand that my illness is unreliable, not me. It's also hard to understand our daily life if they haven't experienced living with a chronic illness or witnessed it themselves to see how debilitating it really is.
What's been your experience on Spoony so far?
I love connecting with other chronically ill people who just get it. I also love connecting with neurodivergent AND chronically ill people as we have so much in common, it can make it easier to get along.
Each week, we share stories from the incredible Spoony community in our newsletter, podcast, and on social media. Share your story with us.
