Spoony Stories - meet Allison! 👋

Welcome to Spoony Stories ❤️🥄 There's no place like Spoony, that's for sure! We have the loveliest community and it's such a delight to get to know some of the wonderful people on Spoony and learning more about their experiences with neurodivergence, chronic illness and disability.

This week, we've been chatting with Allison from the United Kingdom. She shares about her experiences with disability, chronic illness, and neurodivergence, what it's like living with complex health conditions in your early twenties, and so much more! ♥️

Are you neurodivergent, chronically ill, and/or disabled?

Disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent.

What health conditions do you have?

Endometriosis, IBS, Fibromyalgia, MCAS, Anxiety, Autism, and POTS.

How do you explain your health conditions to other people?

I find it really tricky to explain my health conditions to other people, so I try to avoid it. If I do have to explain, I mention that my health conditions are invisible, but are very real.

What impact do your health conditions have on your daily life?

I had to leave my job because of my health. I couldn't keep up anymore because of the fatigue and pain that I experience every day. I've moved back in with family and used up my savings to afford specialist appointments. My life looks pretty different to most people in their early twenties.

What barriers have you experienced in making friends and connecting with people?

Making friends is hard work because no one seems to understand what it's like. People think that I'm unreliable, but they don't see how devastating it is to cancel plans. I wish I could control my body, but I can't.

What's been your experience on Spoony so far?

I'm really glad that I've found Spoony! I can't believe that there's so many other people who are living with complex health conditions, I feel so much more connected and less alone.

Each week, we share stories from the incredible Spoony community in our newsletter, podcast, and on social media. Share your story with us.
